Ristorante Pesto: Philly Magazine
When
the waiter -- South Philly slick, with a smooth Italian accent --
arrives tableside to rattle off the specials at Ristorante Pesto,
close your menu. It will take all your concentration to remember,
and choose between, the options. The list of daily specials at the
new South Broad BYOB from the owners of nearby IO E TU is lengthier
and far more ambitious than the printed selection. Among the most
popular of the recited options: the crabmeat-and-mozzarella-stuffed
portabella mushrooms ($10), though those flavors are somewhat smothered
by a decadently rich tomato-cream sauce. It?s an unexpectedly interesting
appetizer in a restaurant that looks from the awninged outside like
any carbs-and-red sauce joint south of the Italian Market. Inside,
Pesto?s minimalist dining room is designed to spotlight the food:
pizzas (most $7), with toppings such as roasted red peppers and
marinated button mushrooms, from the wood-fired oven; a whole branzino
or Dover sole, filleted table-side by a friendly, if slightly clumsy,
waiter; and sweet-tart limoncello sorbet, served in a chilled champagne
glass.
